We first heard of Jaison Rayan when we came across his dope minimalist portraits of some of our favorite hip hop stars like Danny Brown, Kendrick Lamar, and Action Bronson. But, once we dug a little deeper we found out that he’s not only a designer, but also a student, and a partner at up-and-coming streetwear brand CloakNY. We caught up with Jaison to get the lowdown on his art, his idols, his clothing line, and staying on the grind.,

The Scoop

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF, WHERE YOU LIVE, AND WHAT YOU DO.

My name is Jaison Rayan, I’m 22 years from Long Island, New York. I’m a freelance graphic designer, student, and creative director for CloakNY.

HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR STYLE? ANY ARTISTS THAT INSPIRED YOU?

I wanted to keep these illustrations minimialistic, going along with my style of designing, so most of my portraits are primarily one color with shades to make up the detailing and thick lines to draw out the distinct features in the celebrities’ face. I don’t really have a favorite artist or artists; I mainly draw inspiration from various designers I find on design blogs, tumblr, etc.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO YOUR CELEBRITY ILLUSTRATION SERIES?

Well one day I was just bored at home, and I was listening to the Weeknd’s mixtape “House Of Balloons” and I just thought to myself ‘hey I should do a portrait of this guy!’ From there on out I just made it my new hobby to do when I’m low on freelance work. I also really liked the way the characters in Grand Theft Auto were illustrated being really bold and cartoony but at the same time still having a semi-realistic look to them. The original iPod ads also inspired me a lot with their use of solid colors.

IF YOU COULD DO THE ALBUM ART FOR ANY ARTIST, WHO WOULD IT BE?

Kendrick Lamar or anyone from TDE. I feel like I could really design some great art for them that goes hand in hand with the music they release. Some of their covers are alright, but I know for a fact I can take the direction of their artwork to the next level.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS AN ARTIST/DESIGNER?

Meeting deadlines! Some clients expect you to make masterpieces in such a short period, which is tough when you have three other projects lined up. You definitely have to learn how to manage your time well, and know when to design with your brain instead of your heart to get the job completed.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM PROJECT TO WORK ON?

Working with Nike or Apple. It would be dope working with two of the biggest companies that changed the world using design and aesthetic.

TELL US ABOUT CLOAKNY AND YOUR ROLE IN THAT PROJECT.

CloakNY is an up-and-coming streetwear brand based out of Long Island. It all started with two of my friends and I with the idea to make clothes we want to wear without paying an arm and a leg for it. I’m the creative director for the brand so I decide what kind of designs we’re doing for the season, and I also create all the designs for the apparel, promotions, and whatever else is needed.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU NEXT?

More designs, more illustrations, and more clothes. The grind never stops.

HOW CAN WE FOLLOW YOUR WORK?

I’m always posting new work on my Behance page and on my Instagram.

Big thanks to Jaison for chopping it up with us! Be sure to check out CloakNY too.
