A couple of weeks ago we featured the new Fall collection from New York homies Glamour Kills and the team there was good enough to show us some love in return by sending us some great new gear and filling us in on their brand and what they believe in. We synced up with Glamour Kills’ marketing guru Leslie Brown to get the inside scoop on this fast-moving brand so read on my friend.
INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU DO AT GLAMOUR KILLS:
I’m Leslie Brown, the Marketing Coordinator at Glamour Kills Clothing. I handle non-music marketing related tasks such as events, photos shoots, social media, retailer relationships, contents and giveaways, etc.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR CITY’S FASHION OR STYLE?
I live in Brooklyn and define New York City’s style as eclectic. You can walk down the street and see a guy in cut off jeans and a flannel, a girl in heels and a mini skirt, men in suits, tourists in I <3 NY tees, trend setters in patterned leggings and matching tops, a slew of combat boots and beanies- all in a matter of minutes. People here define themselves through fashion and aren’t afraid to wear what they love. That’s what I like most about the style of NYC.
HOW DID GLAMOUR KILLS GET STARTED?
Fresh out of high school, Mark Capicotto founded the company in 2005 from his parents’ suburban New York basement. With a few t-shirt designs and a hard work ethic, Mark began to grow the brand by selling tee shirts at local music shows and eventually launching glamourkills.com. Glamour Kills continues to participate in music events, such as the Vans Warped Tour, and support a wide range of musicians and artists.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE BRAND’S AESTHETIC?
Glamour Kills is a street wear brand for teens and young adults. We draw influence from upcoming trends, music, and art. As the brand grows, we continue to expand into more cut-and-sew pieces appropriate for upcoming seasons, such as dresses, jackets, and vests.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT VALUE OF GLAMOUR KILLS?
Glamour Kills has a strong connection to its home-grown roots. Every member of the company has a hand in various aspects of the business, and we all work together for the greater good of Glamour Kills. We strive to support artists and musicians that we believe in, and consider all of these people our good friends. Glamour Kills places a strong emphasis on organic growth, meaning we adapt our aesthetic and working relationships naturally based on what we believe in.
HOW DOES GLAMOUR KILLS STAY ORIGINAL IN THE EVER-GROWING STREETWEAR INDUSTRY?
Glamour Kills is original because we do not attempt to be anything we are not. We know music, art, and street fashion, and base all of our lines around what we see on a daily basis. We don’t create a line with the intention to be the next big skate brand or surf brand- those are not things we are familiar with. We make what we love and listen to the feedback from our demographic. Glamour Kills is clothing with heart.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST ‘OH SHIT’ SUCCESS MOMENT FOR GLAMOUR KILLS SO FAR?
The expansion of Glamour Kills from an online store into the various retailers we now work with has been pivotal in the success of the brand. We couldn’t be more appreciative for the retailers that carry our brand both nationally and internationally, as well as the fans that support our brand across the globe. It’s awesome to be able to look on twitter and receive feedback fRom kids in the UK, Singapore, and California simultaneously.
AS A BRAND THAT HAS CROSSOVER APPEAL TO SO MANY PEOPLE, WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN SOME OF THE GREATEST SUCCESS SO FAR?
The greatest success for the brand has definitely been in the music community because of our strong presence there. We participate in the Vans Warped Tour, Bamboozle, and this year we attended Riot Fest in Chicago. We have seen a strong response at all of these events and have grown to become a recognizable brand within this scene. However, we are also growing our awareness among non-music fans through the retailers we distribute to- another reason we are appreciative to work with retailers in the U.S. and abroad.
HOW DOES THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCE THE WAY GLAMOUR KILLS DOES BUSINESS?
The internet and social media is a major influence on Glamour Kills. We are constantly active on our social media outlets and personally respond to fans as much as possible. From our social media, we are able to track trends and receive feedback on the lines we produce. Fans should always know that we see almost everything they tag us in and we are appreciative for their input. We also care about the fans and love to know how they’re doing. A brand is nothing if not catering to its customer.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT NEXT FROM GLAMOUR KILLS?
Glamour Kills continue to expand its design and production capabilities and worK with more artists in the music scene than ever before. We love supporting those who are passionate about what they do as we are passionate about what we do.
As we said, Glamour Kills just dropped their fall collection so they sent us some of their favorite new pieces to experience firsthand, including the trick Glory Daze Button Up and the Live Forever Tarot Tee. The button up has details for days (or ‘Daze’?) including tons of hand drawn artwork that’s printed in highly color-saturated ink for a look that stands out. The hits keep coming with sleeves that roll up revealing a medium wash chambray underneath that matches the contrasting collar and pocket details. Speaking of the collar, it’s a proper button down so your shit won’t be flying all over the place, keeping you looking tight and presentable. Inside, you’ll find a cool sewn-in tag with all the GK info and heritage.
In contrast, the tee is simple yet effective. The dope printing quality we noticed on the button up is even more apparent on the tee with the tarot graphic filling up plenty of real estate on the front. We like the hand-drawn feel which is something different from the ultra-clean digital designs on plenty of other streetwear joints. The tee is a solid medium-weight 100% cotton that drapes well and keeps the wrinkles at bay. Be sure to check out their online shop for the full offering of gear this fall.
The team at Glamour Kills is obviously very driven to grow their brand and get it in the hands and minds of more and more people, all over the world. Their designs are thoughtful and unique, and it’s nice to have that hand-drawn feel on some of their pieces. Make sure to follow them on Twitter and Facebook to keep up on their latest drops and collabs. Thanks to Leslie and Glamour Kills for the swag and the knowledge! Stay tuned for new things from this great brand.
