I don't understand the critic, Wow. There are one or two further moments of inspiration – the Bacharach-esque ‘Secret World’ and the stridant ‘Quiet Ones’ being particularly worthy of note – but what Smith and Orzabal needed was a huge, kaleidoscopic production standard to match their naturally bombastic muse. The time was right for Smith and Orzabal to put aside their differences for a comeback album, the oft-delayed Everybody Loves a Happy Ending.

I've never understood why critics love to hate Tears for Fears. Seriously, I like this new offering from Tears for Fears, and the overt Beatle twists don't bother me (being a Beatle nut). You were missed. These guys make albums. Their older records have aged surprisingly well, even if the videos would be better preserved in concrete underground. This is their first album together since 1989’s celebrated ‘The Seeds Of Love’ and, of course, the runaway success of Gary Jules’ cover of their early hit ‘Mad World’, which managed to somewhat re-invigorate public interest in the band.
They had to go through what they went through, produce the music they produced, and live their lives before this was even possible. If, as the liner notes suggest, Happy Ending is this incarnation of TFF's swan song, Orzabal and Smith can rest assured that they've bowed out with their integrity and legacy fully intact, having retaken their positions on the big chair for the fleeting moments which remain before this wave of '80s romanticism ends. In Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, TfF continues where they left off. Then the film Donnie Darko achieved cult status, featuring a haunting remake of the TFF song "Mad World", and refreshed enough memory banks to breathe new life into the band. I couldn’t see more than a passing resemblance at the time, but listening to ‘Everybody Loves A Happy Ending’ this alleged similarity becomes unavoidable. The album's second half fails to maintain the consistency or momentum of its first, but, if anything, it's even more ambitious. Whether together or apart, Tears For Fears have always made quality music in my mind. "Who Killed Tangerine" continues mining the Beatles vein, juxtaposing each spooky verse against a chorus reminiscent of "Hey Jude." There's a problem loading this menu right now.
