As a game that costs less than other full-games, it is a must-get for bargain hunters and frugal spenders. New versions of Harvest Moon have been released since then. Can't they just be apples and oranges and evaluated on their own merits? Gameplay elements such as farming and mining are present in Terraria. In Minecraft, agriculture can be critical to your survival. Terraria is fun, I've put like 250 hours into it across multiple "playthroughs" after major patches. Only two things alike: house decoration and pixel style. It's Terraria but in space. Everyone is warm and friendly, and the environment is aesthetically pleasing. Terraria is much more like a sidescroller Minecraft than it is any thing like Stardew. To me, both are fun, but I ended up having more hours in Stardew Valley than Terraria. Starting from a barren field of emptiness and growing it into a burgeoning farm gives FarmVille huge replay-value. Terraria lacks the charm of laid-back games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing, and it doesn’t give me the same creative release and building a home in Minecraft might. In this new Harvest Moon game, livestock produces eggs. The aesthetics are humbling, and it's a game that won't grow boring quickly. Every world you generate in Terraria is going to be very different, with different sets of challenges, and even can have different ores and different biomes.
From what I can tell Terraria is like a 2D version of Minecraft and is also a bit cheaper but Stardew Valley at first glance looks a bit more interesting to me. Get Stardew Valley, it's a very relaxing game if you really like Harvest Moon and Rune Factory. Not to over complicate your decision, but you might even look at Starbound.

Teraria is 2d Minecraft and Stardew Valley is the greatest Harvest Moon/Rune Factory experience. Where as stardew valley by default is just the farm you rearrange to your liking. As in Terraria is more focused on opened ended building and exploring. Looking for a simple, relaxing game to keep me busy for a while and I've narrowed it down to these two.
Terraria is more exciting, Stardew has a story. Not really that comparable, SDV is a casual farming game, Terraria is more about combat and bosses, farming is something you dont really HAVE to do in Terraria. Microtransactions take away from the game, but there is plenty of content to keep players engaged without spending a dime.
